The digital twin technology has the potential to significantly improve the design of future offshore wind turbines and operation of the existing ones. In this presentation the digital twin technology will be introduced in the application to offshore wind turbines. Ramboll’s vast experience in applying this technology will be summarized and few examples of value generation by using Ramboll’s True Digital Twin technology will be presented.

Determinants of offshore wind energy sector development in Poland

During the presentation, the author will present and discuss the economic, legal, infrastructural and market conditions for the development of the offshore wind energy sector in Poland. Current offshore wind farm projects, located in the Polish exclusive economic zone of the Baltic Sea, will be presented and potential development scenarios for the Polish offshore wind market in the period up to about 2040 will be discussed.

Installation and service ports – an essential link in offshore wind Energy

Servicing the offshore wind energy sector requires the preparation of appropriate port infrastructure. Installation terminals adapted to the transport of bulky cargo and oversized quay pressures, as well as service ports enabling the handling of offshore wind service units, are a key element in the planned development of the offshore wind energy sector in Poland.

The sector’s ambitious growth plans present an engineering challenge to design and build facilities that meet high technical, economic and environmental requirements. Modern but proven geotechnical and marine construction technologies can be an important element in enabling these plans to be realised.

Od 2001 r. pracownik naukowy zatrudniony w Instytucie Techniki Budowlanej, obecnie w Zakładzie Konstrukcji Budowlanych, Geotechniki i Betonu na stanowisku profesora. Pełni funkcję kierownika Pracowni Geotechnicznej i zastępcy kierownika Zakładu. Ukończył studia w specjalności geologia inżynierska oraz studia na kierunku budownictwo. W 2008 r. w ITB uzyskał tytuł doktora nauk technicznych w zakresie budownictwa, a w 2020 r. stopień doktora habilitowanego w dyscyplinie inżynieria lądowa i transport nadany przez RND PW.
Jako pracownik ITB opracował ponad 170 ekspertyz i opracowań dotyczących posadowienia różnych obiektów budowlanych, dokumentacje badań podłoża i projekty geotechniczne oraz prowadzi nadzory geotechniczne na budowach (m.in. jako inspektor nadzoru w zakresie geotechniki przy rozbudowie metra w Warszawie). Jest autorem i współautorem ponad 90 publikacji naukowych dotyczących praktycznych zagadnień geotechnicznych, szczególnie związanych z wykonywaniem i interpretacją badań in situ oraz z ustalaniem parametrów geotechnicznych do projektowania, prezentowanych na konferencjach, sympozjach krajowych i zagranicznych oraz publikowanych w prasie technicznej. Jest także współautorem pierwszego w Polsce poradnika dotyczącego projektowania geotechnicznego wg EC7 (Projektowanie geotechniczne według Eurokodu 7, ITB 2011) oraz współautorem monografii Badania Podłoża Budowli, PWN 2020. Główną dziedziną zainteresowań naukowych jest dokumentowanie warunków podłoża w badaniach polowych i laboratoryjnych, w tym z wykorzystaniem metod sejsmicznych oraz analiza współpracy układu konstrukcja–podłoże do realizacji głębokich wykopów, stacji i tuneli metra, oraz obiektów energetyki, w tym turbin wiatrowych. Działa również jako członek zespołu normalizacyjnego Komitetu Technicznego 254 ds. Geotechniki przy PKN oraz jest delegatem na posiedzeniach komitetów CEN TC250/SC7 (Eurokod 7 Committee) i CEN/TC 341 (Geotechnical Investigation and Testing) oraz członkiem Komitetu TC 206 (Observation Method) przy ISSMGE. Jest także członkiem zarządu Podkomitetu Budownictwa Podziemnego przy PKG.

Determination of geotechnical parameters for the foundation of offshore objects based on laboratory tests

Geopolitical and climate conditions force us to effectively search for alternative energy sources. Wind energy is one of the possibilities, while location restrictions are causing a growing interest in the implementation of such installations in offshore conditions. Optimization of the foundation of such objects requires appropriate quality of ground recognition and a package of geotechnical parameters selected for the design needs. In addition to the description of the mechanical properties resulting from the statics of the object, there are parameters describing the behavior associated with dynamic interactions that are transferred to the ground. The economy and safety of off-shore structures  requires comparing the values of the natural vibrations of a system consisting of a supporting structure with the often dynamic forcing properties resulting from the rotor rotational speed, the natural vibrations of the rotor lobes and other turbine or platform components, and forced water waves.  These factors determine the scope of geotechnical research, including the regime of conducting laboratory tests in advanced measurement devices, i.e. a direct simple shear apparatus and a triaxial apparatus with system of internal measurement and bender elements, in the range of static and dynamic (cyclic) loads, or measurements in a resonant column. The extended methodology and measurement range of these devices allows for modeling the behavior of offshore objects and assessing the  impact of, i.e. possible displacements of the bottom sediment, undermining the foundation, or material damping of the structure from the ground and foundation side. The possibilities and limitations of determining the required geotechnical parameters will be discussed in the paper on the basis of already carried out research in an accredited geotechnical laboratory.

He has worked as an assistant engineer, structural analysis engineer, and has been a partner and managing director at Geotechnik und Dynamik Consult GmbH since 2004. Since 2016, he has also been a lecturer at the Institute of Civil Engineering of the Technical University of Berlin.
He specializes in site investigation and foundation expertise, design of structural elements under static and dynamic loads, geotechnical analysis and marine geotechnics. He has worked as a geotechnical expert in a number of offshore wind energy projects (including: Dan Tysk, GAIA III, SEAWIND IV, Kriegers Flak, MEG I, Nordsee Ost, Hohe See, Nordsee Ost, Nordergründe, Westermeerwind, Baltic 1 – GICONSOF, TRIANEL BORKUM WEST II, Hollandse Kust Noord, Baltic Hub). Geotechnical design of offshore wind turbine foundations under cyclic loading

Predicting the performance of offshore wind turbines through their lifetime is challenging. Being considered as dynamic systems and being subjected to harsh environments, a change of the initial design conditions is inevitable. Cyclic loading can lead to progressive degradation of soil in terms of plastic strain accumulation, pore pressure built up and evolution of stiffness. Their prediction is of vital importance during the design phase. The presentation summarizes latest design methodologies for cyclically loaded foundations with special focus on Baltic Sea soil conditions.

Graduate of the Faculty of Oil and Gas Drilling at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow with a specialization in drilling. Since 1999, he has been involved in horizontal drilling technology. Mariusz Leszczyński is Managing Director at GuD Offshore Wind Polska sp. z o.o. and the Chairman of the Board at Geomechanika sp. z o.o. simultaneously acting as geotechnical expert and designer. During his career he was involved in numerous aspects of geotechnical engineering in Poland and overseas comprising design and consulting services, as well as project management and leading large teams. He has got 25 years of professional experience and for more than 10 years he is fulfilling the role of the Chairman of KT 254 Technical Committee on Geotechnics at the Polish Standardisation Committee. He is also a member of the European Committee TC250/SC7 as part of CEN regarding geotechnical normalisation, strongly involved in the preparation of the new revision of Eurocode 7.
He was involved, among other, in iconic projects like the Złota 44 high-rise building in Warsaw, Silesia City Center in Katowice, Roskilde Fjord Forbindelse Bridge in Denmark, Aviation Museum in Kraków oraz Wheatstone Gas Terminal in Australia. He was acting as project manager and key geotechnical expert for various feasibility studies, technical and economic analyses, as well as various designs of buildings and infrastructure projects in Poland and overseas.

Short review of the offshore wind development history from global perspective

The presentation will encompass general overview of the historical development of offshore wind branch globally, with particular attention to our geographical zone. The author will present the characteristics of this business area supported by some numbers as to enable better understanding of the investment scale in respect of the overall energy sector. This also aims to assist the understating of the Baltic Sea potential against the global developments in this market area.

Current trends and hot topics of scientific research for Offshore Wind Energy

The presentation includes a current review of world literature, covering issues related to the design, implementation and operation of foundations for offshore wind energy facilities. Technical solutions (technologies) under current development worldwide are shown. Information on the applied and developed research methods has also been compiled, divided into model tests on a laboratory scale, tests on real world objects, and concepts of numerical modeling with the use of leading computer programs dedicated to geotechnical issues. The presented review is intended by the Author to facilitate current discussions between Institutions, Companies and Research Offices regarding the scope of possible support from the Universities for planned and implemented investment projects in the field of Offshore Wind Energy.

Łukasz Sikorski is an engineer with the soul of a humanist and a longtime aficionado of wind turbines, who also sees himself as a “man of the sea”. He considers offshore wind energy as an important element of the future energy mix for the world and our country, while also an important element of solving the energy trilemma. He has nearly 17 years of experience in various aspects of development, construction and operation of wind projects. Initially, he gained experience on behalf of the investor and contractor, and then for many years in the consulting industry, dealing, among others, with the provision of various services related to the development and implementation of projects, as well as financing transactions and acquisitions of renewable energy projects. He was involved in various offshore wind energy projects in our country as well as in Western and Asian markets.

Currently, he is the director responsible for the European market at Offshore Wind Consultants, a global consulting company focusing on offshore wind energy. He is interested in issues related to reducing the cost of offshore wind energy, risk and project management during the implementation of these investments, as well as aspects of sustainable development related to this field of energy.

Łukasz received his master’s degree in engineering from the Gdańsk University of Technology and completed his Master of Business Administration studies at the Kozminski University. He also works as a guest lecturer at Pomeranian universities on a number of studies related to the subject of offshore wind energy and management (e.g. programs in the fields of offshore energy at the Gdańsk University of Technology and offshore risk management and the MBA studies at the Gdynia Maritime University). Piotr Walasik is an enthusiastic primary steel engineer in the Offshore Wind Structures department at Ramboll Poland, based in Gdynia. He has 15 years of experience in geotechnical consulting, design and coordination of design topics in cooperation with the production team. That is, working closely with production during the ongoing construction works and carrying out continuous design optimization on the ongoing implementation. On a day-to-day basis, in addition to managing the project team, he is involved in design and construction support.
