Optimization of loads having the impact on the pipelines laid in the ground

The optimal load distribution for circular section pipelines is the radial load, evenly distributed over the entire circumference. For such a load pattern, the bending moments disappear, and the only internal forces are the axial forces and the compressive stress induced by them. During the presentation, there will be presented technical possibilities that allow modification of loads distribution and enable their optimization.

Henk Kruse

dr Henk M.G. Kruse, Deltares

Senior geotechnical consult and is working in the field of underground infrastructure. He is a specialist in geo engineering of pipelines especially in the disciplines of trench less installation techniques and the effects of installation activities on the surroundings.

Horizontal directional drilling: past, present and future

Since the early nineties of last century the trenchless techniques were applied more often. Especially the horizontal directional drilling technique became very popular. Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is one of the fastest growing techniques for trenchless installation of pipelines. On one hand HDD provides a logical alternative when cables, pipelines or small tunnels need to cross roads, railways, dikes, wetlands, rivers and other structures that have to remain intact. On the other hand HDD techniques minimize the impact of installation activities in densely populated and economical sensitive areas. During the past decades major developments in HDD took place. Not only the equipment was improved, but due to the significant increase of the knowledge level major steps forward were token. The developments are ongoing and in the near future further improvements are expected.

Direct Pipe for small diameters. Comparison of Direct Pipe, HDD and microtunneling technologies

The Direct Pipe technology for small diameters has been developed for crossing terrain obstacles with steel pipelines from DN500 to DN800 in the distance up to 1000 metres. Until now, the limitations in the use of smaller diameters in the traditional Direct Pipe technology were caused by the dimensions of the centrifugal pumps for the mud transport system, which were installed in the pipelines as well as the size of the hydraulic aggregate for the drive of the cutting head of the head. Along with the development and testing of the jet pump and compact hydraulic unit, the Direct Pipe technology has been able to perform pipe crossings with diameters from 20 “(508 millimetres) to 28” (711 millimetres) for distances up to 1000 metres. In the second part of the presentation, the following technologies will be compared: Direct Pipe, HDD and microtunnelling together with an indication of their advantages and limitations, especially in the installation of gas pipelines.

Diagnostics, assessment of technical condition and monitoring of large-diameter sewage collectors

In recent years, many new trenchless projects and modernization of underground infrastructure of large cities have been carried out. Execution of new facilities, especially in a strongly urbanized environment, is related to the impact of nearby building objects and may cause a change in water and ground conditions. Diagnostics and assessment of the technical condition of the collectors require conducting multi-criterial, complex analyzes (often going beyond the standard recommendations) and the use of modern measurement techniques to increase the safety of their operation. In carrying out analyzes, you can use both the design and operation stages, numerical calculations to determine displacements and the location of measurement points and the selection of monitoring methods. During the occurrence of problems in the operation of objects it is important to carry out, using modern measurement techniques (eg geophysics), assess the condition of the structure and the surrounding soil, determine the current values of the parameters of the materials and a very thorough analysis of various factors that could affect the emergence of an emergency. The paper will present experiments based on technical condition evaluation of existing large-diameter sewage collectors, methods of diagnosing causes of operational problems by means of modern measurement techniques and numerical models, reflecting local geotechnical conditions and existing infrastructure.

Comparative tests of manhole shafts renovation methods

Can wastewater manholes be rehabilitated so that they remain permanently water-tight? There is, indeed, little point in rehabilitating wastewater pipes without paying attention to the numerous defective manholes. This is particularly true in water infiltration zones, since a really watertight sewer network can only be achieved provided the manholes are also rehabilitated. What are the benefits and the draw-backs of mortar coating, plastic coating and lining. What quality can be expected? This first comparative product test in this field gives you the answers.

E-Power Pipe technology for trenchless construction of high voltage grids

For several years, energy networks have been struggling with social protests associated with the construction of overhead high voltage transmission lines. Therefore Herrenknecht has developed a modern, trenchless E-Power Pipe technology for the construction of underground, plastic pipelines for the installation of high voltage transmission networks. This technology allows the installation of plastic pipelines with a diameter of 300 mm to 700 mm at distances up to 1500 m. At the later stage, these pipelines are used for laying high voltage transmission cables in them.

Construction of the underground structures tests necessary for assessing their technical condition

Underground structures, due to their location, are exposed to many factors that have a destructive effect on their constructions. In order to be able to reliably develop technical expertise regarding the actual technical condition of an underground structure, it is necessary to carry out specialized research on its construction. Currently, there are many research methods that allow us to perform tests in-situ without having to interfere in its construction in order to take samples and examine them in the laboratory.
