The acceptance of the works guidelines for renovation technologies

The acceptance of the works concerning sanitary networks renovated using the trenchless technologies, should be based on the tests results of the physical parameters characteristic for the particular solution. Equally important elements are the tests including visual assessment, concerning the accuracy of renovation layer in terms of its geometrical correctness and other characteristics that could lessen its quality. The range of conducted tests should be concurrent with the current standards and executed by the independent laboratories. During the lecture, a range of tests included in the guidelines will be presented. This range should be defined by the project guidelines and depend on the used technology.

The experiences of the investors: designing, planning, executing, supervising and acceptance of the works done using the no-dig methods illustrated by the case of Aquanet S.A.

Conducting a project including the usage of trenchless methods links to many problems, concerning, for example, the execution of the project or some social aspects of the project. Primarily it generates many actions concerning preparations: planning, tenders preparation, obtaining all of the necessary permissions, designing.

What should we consider? To what should we be attentive? What should we choose? During the presentation, there will be discussed the aspect of the most important problems and obstacles that are faced by the investor during the execution of the particular project phases. A special emphasis will be put on those aspects that have an impact on increasing time and funds consumption.

The Analysis of Pipeline Pulling Forces In HDD Projects Based On Real Data

This presentation provides an overview of systematically conducted research and analysis undertaken in order to broaden the knowledge in the field of pipeline trenchless technologies with the application of HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) method. Within the course of work accessible technical data connected with the realisation of over twenty drilling projects performed by Nawitel company have been collected. The research method included, inter alia, gathering and verifying information and data registered in the drilling process. On the grounds of real values of pulling forces the accuracy of Plastic Pipe Institute model results have been reviewed. The final effect of the research and analytical work carried out will be a proposition of coefficient values for installation forces estimation models so as the received installation loads would stay at safe levels.

Drilling in the difficult geological condition – Direct Pipe technology used for TAP pipeline construction – a case study

Over few last years, the level of trenchless projects’ complexity has risen significantly. Lack of space for laying the pipeline in order to install it, complex geological conditions, high risk of a negative impact on the environment result in searching for the innovative and technically advanced solutions.

During the presentation, there will be analyzed a case study of two Direct Pipe drillings for the Trans Adriatic Pipeline high-pressure gas pipeline in Greece. The challenge was accepted by the PPI Chrobok S.A. company, that at the beginning of this year executed a DN1200 pipeline installation under the Aliakamonas River. The installation was fully successful. It was one of the most difficult and the most challenging crossing in the history of Direct Pipe technology

Review of the pressurized pipelines’ renovation methods

Pressurized pipelines are mainly water and gas pipelines. Because of their specificity, their technical condition is not systematically assessed, unlike the gravity sewage pipelines. Technical condition of pressurized pipelines is assessed on the basis of water or gas leakages. When the level of the leakage becomes unacceptable, it is time for the renovation. If the technical condition of the pipeline is overall good and its construction safely transfers the load, it is sufficient to seal the pipe using one of the available technologies. If carrying capacity is threatened, application of the inliner (CIPP liner or a new plastic pipe with a smaller diameter) capable of transferring the loads is necessary.

Horizontal directional drilling, the drilling fluid flow in the borehole

The Horizontal Directional Drilling method enables to lay a prefabricated pipeline into the ground by the creation of a borehole in which the pipeline is pulled in. The method is used for decades. Nowadays a trend to the installation of longer pipelines and larger diameters is clearly visible. Pipelines are installed faster by the reduction of the number of reaming stages during which the borehole is reamed. This faster installation process of the longer pipelines in larger boreholes is only possible by improvement of the flow of drilling fluid. The improved flow of drilling fluid is necessary for a lower pressure gradient in between the drilling head and the entry point and also for the transport of the cut soil particles out of the borehole.

Dymitr Petrow-Ganew

An innovative implementation of the jet pump in trenchless technologies

During the presentation, there will be discussed the topic of implementing the jet pump with the hydraulic unit into the microtunneling process. This can help increase the drilling length for small diameter conduits (< DN800) up to several hundred meters. For Direct Pipe technology it will be possible to install steel 20–36” pipelines up to 1000 meters long. What’s important, durability and reliability of a jet pump are significantly greater than in the case of centrifugal pumps.

He organized the first seminars and workshops concerning HDD in Poland (1996-1999). Since 2003 he has been working for the German company Herrenknecht AG. He introduced, among the others, many TBM machines to Polish market, e.g. for metro tunnel construction. He authored the several publications and papers on microtunnelling and TBM shields. He is a member of the international organizations ISTT, ITA AITES and a member of Underground Construction Subcommittee of the Polish Committee of Geotechnics.

Florian Piechurski

Trenchless methods of asbestos cement water pipes replacement

During the presentation, a case of a water and sewage company will be analyzed. The company more and more often uses the trenchless methods of pipeline renovation. The unfavourable age (over 64% of the pipelines is older than 25 years) and material (almost 20 km of the pipelines is made of asbestos cement) structure forces the company to prepare a long-term strategy of waterworks renovation without the need to plan for 2 or three years.  The additional challenge is asbestos removal programme – until 2032 PWiK has to replace 1,3 km of the pipes a year. The possibility of the trenchless replacement of the conduits should be utilised to the maximum. A significant weight of using the trenchless methods is carried by the satisfaction of the land owners – the administration and particular individuals. The not too elaborated scope of the works and the and the speed of conducting them has a great effect on the company’s image.

dr inż. Florian Piechurski, Silesian University of Technology

Trenchless pipelines’ renovation methods – a classification and the conditions determining the choice of a method

The basic classification of the pipelines’ renovation (technical rehabilitation) distinguishes the terms of the pipes’ repair, renovation and replacement. During the presentation, classification of the pipelines’ renovation methods related to those basic terms  and the nomenclature used both in theory and in practice will be discussed. Representative technologies that belong to the particular groups of the recognised classification will be also presented. Included will be the conditions determining the choice of renovation method for the pipelines suffering from a different degree of damage.

Andrzej Roszkowski

Design and executive practice

An effective and efficient pipe rehabilitation requires the involvement of every side of the investment process: an investor, a designer and a contractor. Trenchless methods used in such cases are still not sufficiently known by the broad range of the investors and designers, even the contractors frequently prefer to choose their own methods. It is not possible to present all of the mistakes that are being made throughout the process but displaying even a part of them will allow an improvement in the field of executing projects and operating the infrastructure.
