Selected geotechnical problems, issues, and solutions in railway construction in southern Poland

The modernization or construction of new sections of railway lines, particularly high-speed and very high-speed lines, in southern Poland—where the routes pass through hilly and mountainous terrain—poses a significant engineering challenge, often requiring the use of advanced geotechnical solutions.
Examples of such projects include the ongoing modernization of railway line No. 104 on the Chabówka–Nowy Sącz section and the upcoming construction of new lines: No. 622 (Węgrzyce Wielkie–Tymbark), 623 (Fornale–Szczyrzyc), 627 (Baliachówka–Podłęże), and 628 (Porąbka–Stróża). These investments are part of the so-called “Podłęże–Piekiełko” system. Key challenges facing engineers, including geotechnical engineers, include: stabilizing and securing areas at risk of landslides, constructing retaining structures to allow for the undercutting of slopes and embankments, building tunnel portals, providing protection against rockfalls, foundation work for engineering structures, and reinforcing the subgrade.

He has been with Tergon since its founding, initially serving as a project manager, and in 2025 he was appointed Director of Contracts and a member of the management board. He is responsible for securing contracts for the company, contributing to the implementation of key projects, including:
– construction of a DN1000 gas pipeline with a design pressure of 8.4 MPa between Strachocina and Pogórska Wola (installation of landslide protection measures),
– the construction of a gas pipeline connecting the transmission systems of the Republic of Poland and the Slovak Republic, together with the infrastructure necessary for its operation – the Strachocina gas pipeline (construction of landslide protection measures),
– improvements to the transport link between the islands of Uznam and Wolin in Świnoujście – construction of a tunnel under the Świna River (comprehensive construction of emergency exits),
– as well as numerous projects related to the modernization of the LK104 railway line on sections A1, E, and D (construction of retaining structures to stabilize slopes and landslide-prone
He is actively involved in the geotechnical industry—he gives lectures and presentations on behalf of Tergon, including at the annual Nowkol conference in Zakopane, as well as guest lectures at technical universities.
