Between tunnels: design and implementation challenges in the construction of the second metro line connectors

The speaker will discuss key aspects of the design and construction of connections between tunnels on the second metro line, with particular emphasis on variable geotechnical conditions, the impact of groundwater, and structural requirements. Methods for constructing chambers and cross-passages between tunnels will be presented, as well as the organization of logistics in confined underground spaces, including the transport of materials, spoil, and equipment. Dynamic design changes resulting from conditions encountered during the works, monitoring and risk management systems, and the priority importance of safety during implementation will also be presented. The key role of connectors in releasing subsequent work fronts and ensuring the continuity of construction of the next stages of the metro will also be emphasized.

Paweł Bielak’s professional experience includes developing design solutions for deep excavation support, including participation in the analysis of soil and groundwater conditions, the selection of appropriate technical solutions, and the preparation of design documentation. He developed and solidified these skills while working for the general contractor on the Warsaw Metro construction project, where he serves as a structural engineer.
