Already second drilling competition will be organised during the conference for contractors using horizontal directional drilling method to make installations.

HDD RODEO – RULES

1. Competitions are held during the Trenchless Engineering Conference 2012 on 13^th June 2012.
2. Opportunity to participate have all companies operating in HDD.
3. Each company may apply only one team drill.
4. Teams consist of four persons (3 participants + 1 manager).
5. Permissible class of device: maximum 150 kN pulling force. The unit should be equipped with drilling rods - 3 m length.
6. Each team has complete freedom in choosing the drilling equipment, drill pipe, drilling tools, location system and the type of mud.
7. Drilling companies are responsible for providing: HDD unit with accessories and mud system. Participants are provided with protective suits, helmets, boots, goggles and gloves.
8. The subject of the competition is to make a directional hole at the distance of 80 - 100 m, and then to pull into it a fragment of polyethylene pipeline.
9. A checkpoint at assumed depth of 2 m will be set half-way.
10. Required minimum drilling depth in horizontal section - 1.8 m.
11. Target on surface in form of a stake.
12. A complete documentation of pilot drilling (station no., depth, inclination, etc.) is required.
13. Installation of a 110 mm (SDR 11) HDPE pipeline, length 12 m. The pipeline will be supplied by the conference organiser.
14. The criterion for evaluation is total time of pilot hole drilling, underground set retooling and pulling in a 12-metre long section of HDPE pipes. Penal seconds may be given for lack of precision in reaching the checkpoint, point of exit, and drilling fluid coming out onto the surface if it happens.
15. Penalty scale:
    • departure from target: 1 minute penalty for each 0.2m;
    • departure from assumed depth at checkpoint: 1 minute penalty for each 0.2m;
    • deviation to the left / right at checkpoint: 1 minute penalty for each 0.2m;
    • drilling fluid coming out onto the surface: 1 minute for each case.
16. After completion of the Rodeo it is required to remove the 12-metre pipeline section.
17. A jury consisting of three members is responsible for ensuring proper course of the competition, and for announcing final results.
